Project Protect – Wear your helmet!
This term, the Adolescent Community has had presentations from two organisations working in Bali. The first of these was from the Rotary Club which is involved in a service project called ‘Project Protect’. This project is to raise awareness of road safety through wearing of helmets. The second was a presentation about the East Bali Poverty Project. This project involves funding the Ban village’s children to have a better education for the kids so they can help their families and village. After considering both of these worthy service causes, we decided to focus our efforts this term on ‘Project Protect’.
In Bali, many people are not aware of the dangers of riding motorbikes and motor scooters. Around 80% of the people in fatal motorbike accidents die because they are not wearing helmets. Many people just wear helmets to avoid the police and they do not usually put helmets on their children because the police wouldn’t fine them because they are too young. Project Protect is also aiming to educate the parents to prioritize the children. The Adolescent Community is going to go around to local kindergartens and tell the children about the importance of wearing a helmet (and clipping the chin strap). Working with Helmet Man and the Rotary Club, we are also going to be giving out helmets to the children in local kindergartens.
Our first fundraiser for this project was a Bake Sale on February 19, January 2016. This was very well supported by the school community and we raised a total of IDR 882,000.
